It\u2019s thought that the language <\/span><b>descends from the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/51099079_Bayesian_phylogenetic_analysis_supports_an_agricultural_origin_of_Japonic_languages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><b>language used by the rice farmers who arrived in Japan<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Korean Peninsula, and not the hunter-gatherers who inhabited the islands 30,000 years ago.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tatutrad.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4199\" style=\"width:761px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems that Japanese did not have a writing system until Chinese characters were first imported during the Kofun period (3rd and 4th centuries); these characters, known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kanji<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, began to merge with the existing language, bringing with it vocabulary and phonology. During the Heian period (794\u20131185), Japanese invented its own syllabic writing systems called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hiragana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">katakana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p><b>In the mid-Samurai period (1185\u20131600), the Japanese language evolved to the point of resembling what we currently know as Japanese.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is the period in which the first European loanwords also appeared. In 1853, following the end of Japan&#8217;s self-imposed period of isolation, the influx of loanwords from western languages increased considerably.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Features and Characteristics of Japanese<\/h2>\n\n<p>Now that we\u2019ve briefly touched on the origin and history of Japanese, we\u2019re going to look at some of its features:<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Three Writing Systems in Japanese<\/h3>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese is not only characterised by its uncertain origin, but also by its <\/span><b>three different writing systems: <\/b><b><i>kanji<\/i><\/b><b>, <\/b><b><i>hiragana<\/i><\/b><b> and <\/b><b><i>katakana<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p><b><i>Kanji<\/i><\/b><b> is the oldest of the three<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is a system based on symbols adopted from the Chinese language. It is formed by logograms which are characters that represent a complete word.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p><b><i>Katana <\/i><\/b><b>and <\/b><b><i>hiragana <\/i><\/b><b>are syllabic writing systems native to Japan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and together, they are referred to as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The differences between these systems are comparable to italics and \u201cunformatted\u201d printed characters. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiragana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used to write Japanese words while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">katakana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used to write western words adopted by Japanese.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p>These three writing systems are used today, at times even in the same phrase, making it even harder for non-native speakers to understand the language.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tatutrad.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4205\" style=\"width:696px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spoken Japanese<\/h3>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the majority of Asian languages, <\/span><b>Japanese uses pitch accents to express different words<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which would otherwise be phonetically identical.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hashi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has three different meanings according to the syllable on which the pitch accent falls:<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p>Accent on the first syllable: chopsticks<\/p>\n\n<p>Accent on the second syllable: bridge<\/p>\n\n<p>No accent: edge<\/p>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, it\u2019s worth noting that <\/span><b>most words don\u2019t have pitch accents<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; that\u2019s why, if you hear someone speaking Japanese, you might get the impression that the conversation is monotonous and the cadence, very controlled. This is necessary to clearly differentiate those words with pitch accents from those without.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Formal and Informal Japanese<\/h3>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different words and expressions are used when addressing a stranger or superior in Japanese compared to speaking to a child, family member or friend. For example, <\/span><b>there are more than five different words in Japanese for \u2018I\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are used according to the context.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In situations requiring a formal form of address, <\/span><b>honorific speech called <\/b><b><i>keigo<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is normally used, which literally means \u2018respectful word\u2019.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Japanese Dialects and Accents<\/h3>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It comes as no surprise that it&#8217;s hard to pinpoint the origin of Japanese if we consider that Japan is made up of more than 6,800 islands, many of which are mountainous. This has caused <\/span><b>numerous language variants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to develop over centuries.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Japan, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tatutrad.net\/en\/what-is-the-difference-between-a-language-and-a-dialect\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s wrong to refer to the differences in language as dialects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since they are in fact the same language with the same vocabulary, and <\/span><b>only minor grammatical differences and variations in the use of pitch accents.<\/b><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p>Normally, the Tokyo accent is taught in schools, however it&#8217;s also very common to hear the accent from Osaka. The inhabitants of the main cities in Japan can speak and understand both accents, which are considered the clearest. However, the same cannot be said for those who live in the countryside or on remote islands, who tend to develop their own pronunciation.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Japanese Words Incorporated in English<\/h2>\n\n<p>The widespread presence of Japanese culture throughout the world is nothing new; its customs, language, history, animated series, etc., have made many foreigners look to Japan as a reference country.<\/p>\n\n<p>Everyday conversations are loaded with foreign terms from different languages, including Japanese.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Japanese words used in modern-day English mainly belong to groups of words associated with martial arts and sport, cooking and food, arts and leisure, among others.<\/p>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><b>examples of Japanese words<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that we\u2019ve incorporated into our speech are:<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Aikido<\/td><td>Bento<\/td><td>Biombo<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Bonsai<\/td><td>Kamikaze<\/td><td>Karaoke<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Karate<\/td><td>Karateka<\/td><td>Katana<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Zen <\/td><td>Futon<\/td><td>Jaraquiri<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Manga<\/td><td>Matcha<\/td><td>Mikado<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Nippon<\/td><td>Origami<\/td><td>Ramen<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Samurai<\/td><td>Sake<\/td><td>Sashimi<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Sensei<\/td><td>Soja<\/td><td>Sudoku<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Sumo<\/td><td>Tsunami<\/td><td>Surimi<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Tempura<\/td><td>Tofu<\/td><td>Yudoca<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><br\/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><p>\u00a0<\/p>&#13;\n<p><b>Japanese loanwords are constantly being incorporated into English<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and these loanwords are in fact becoming more frequent largely due to the arrival of Japanese cuisine.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p>Do you know any other words that we use on a daily basis that we\u2019ve missed off the list?
