Is this the main difference between a language and a dialect?<\/p>\n\n<p>Not necessarily: none of the current languages had a writing system when they first appeared, in fact, they originally were simply a method of oral communication, which later was expressed with meaningful marks.<\/p>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, <\/span><b>how can we differentiate between language and dialect?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> By considering the concept of mutually intelligible languages, for example.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-que-es-un-dialecto-desde-el-punto-de-vista-linguistico\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, <\/span><b>how can we differentiate between language and dialect?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> By considering the concept of mutually intelligible languages, for example.<\/span><\/p><\/h3>\n\n<p><p><b>Mutually intelligible languages are those languages where speakers can understand each other<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whether in writing or speaking, without needing to have studied the other language.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cSpeaking the &#8216;same language&#8217; does not depend on two speakers speaking identical languages, but only very similar languages\u201d<\/p>\n<cite> (Adrian Akmajian, Richard Demers, Ann Farmer, and Robert Harnish, Linguistics: An Introduction to Language and Communication. MIT Press, 2001).<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Linguists understand there is a mutual relationship in a dialect: if two languages, A and B, are mutually intelligible and also historically related, linguists say that \u201cA and B are dialects\u201d, that \u201cA is a dialect of B\u201d or that \u201cB is a dialect of A\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-que-es-un-dialecto-desde-el-punto-de-vista-sociolinguistico\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a dialect in sociolinguistic terms?<\/span><\/p><\/h3>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another useful approach when identifying the differences between these two concepts is the sociolinguistic aspect. <\/span><b>The majority of languages have a prevalent (or standard) variant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> considered by some speakers to be \u201cbetter\u201d than the other ones, called \u201cdialects\u201d.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the case of Andalusian, for example, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tatutrad.net\/como-saber-si-hablas-castellano-o-espanol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Castilian or standard Spanish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, spoken in Madrid, or Cockney and Standard English in British English. This is very common in some African languages, for example.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-ejemplos-de-variedades-dialectales\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Examples of dialect varieties<\/span><\/p><\/h2>\n\n<p>We\u2019ll now look at some examples of dialect varieties of different languages spoken in the world.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-dialectos-del-espanol\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spanish dialects<\/span><\/p><\/h3>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cvc.cervantes.es\/ensenanza\/biblioteca_ele\/sicele\/006_matiasmonheler.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CVC (Virtual Cervantes Centre) web page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cParticularly in the case of Spanish, some studies on the current linguistic situation set out <\/span><b>eight dialects, according to the areas where the language is spoken<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Leonese, Aragonese, Judeo-Spanish, Extremaduran, Murcian Spanish, the Andalusian linguistic modality, Canarian and Spanish of the Americas\u201d.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-dialectos-del-ingles-britanico\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British English dialects<\/span><\/p><\/h3>\n\n<p><p><b>In the United Kingdom alone there are nearly 40 dialects with completely different accents<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, in some cases, with certain differences in their orthography and morphology.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tatutrad.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5874\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The 10 most famous British dialects are:<\/p>\n\n<p>1. Scottish<\/p>\n\n<p>2. Geordie (Newcastle)<\/p>\n\n<p>3. Scouse (Liverpool)<\/p>\n\n<p>4. Yorkshire<\/p>\n\n<p>5. Welsh<\/p>\n\n<p>6. Brummie (Birmingham)<\/p>\n\n<p>7. West Country<\/p>\n\n<p>8. RP or Standard English (Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Surrey and Sussex)<\/p>\n\n<p>9. Essex<\/p>\n\n<p>10. Cockney (East London)<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-dialectos-del-italiano\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Italian dialects<\/span><\/p><\/h3>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Italy is one of the countries with most dialectal variety. In this instance, however, it would be more appropriate to talk about a <\/span><b>situation of diglossia: \u201cBilingualism, especially when one of the languages enjoys superior social or political prestige or privilege\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whereby standard Italina, in particular, is superior to the rest.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p>Some of these Italian dialects are: Tuscan, Romanesco, Napolitan, Sicilian, Piadmontese, Lombard, Ligurian, Venetian, Friulian, Ladin and Sardinian, amongst others.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tatutrad.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/la-pregunta-definitiva-Cual-es-la-diferencia-entre-lengua-y-dialecto-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4146\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-entonces-cual-es-la-diferencia-entre-lengua-y-dialecto\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what is the difference between a language and a dialect?<\/span><\/p><\/h2>\n\n<p><p><b>It will depend on who you ask and the differentiating elements of language and dialect their answer is based on<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p>It\u2019s certainly a very interesting topic to debate with friends and acquaintances because there\u2019s no doubt that everyone has a very different perception of what is a dialect and  a language.<\/p>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you really want to split hairs, ask them the following question: <\/span><b>are all dialects languages?<\/b><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p>We\u2019d love to continue the debate in the comments!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When explaining the differences between a language and a dialect, many doubts and differing opinions arise.
