Together with English and French, it is also <\/span><b>one of the procedural languages of the European Commission.<\/b><\/p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tatutrad.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/image.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4211\" style=\"width:643px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-el-aleman-a-lo-largo-de-la-historia\">German Throughout History<\/h2>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout history, and from its origins, German has undergone various changes which have given rise to <\/span><b>different denominations depending on the period:<\/b><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-aleman-alto-antiguo\">Old High German<\/h3>\n\n<p><p><b>Old High German was spoken in the 10th and 11th centuries.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s grammar complexity was similar to Slavic and Latin. Speakers of modern-day German can\u2019t understand it if they haven&#8217;t studied it previously.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-nuevo-alto-aleman\">Middle High German<\/h3>\n\n<p><p><b>Middle High German was spoken up until the end of the Middle Ages.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s relatively easy to understand for today\u2019s German speakers.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-nuevo-alto-aleman\">New High German<\/h3>\n\n<p><p><b>New High German dates back to the end of the Middle Ages,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and just like Middle High German, today\u2019s German speakers find it relatively easy to understand.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-los-dialectos-del-aleman\"> German Dialects<\/h2>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a <\/span><b>large variety of German dialects,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all of them belong to the <\/span><b>dialect continuum from Low German to High German.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Only geographically neighbouring dialects are mutually intelligible and many of them are not understood by speakers of Standard German.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-dialectos-del-bajo-aleman\">Low German Dialects<\/h3>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dialects of <\/span><b>Low German are more related to Dutch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than German dialects.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-dialectos-del-alto-aleman\">High German Dialects<\/h3>\n\n<p><p><b>Standard German belongs to the High German dialect,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which developed in the region of Saxony and was accepted as the written standard in the 16th and 17th centuries.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/tatutrad.net\/en\/what-language-is-spoken-in-switzerland\"><b>Swiss German<\/b><\/a><b> and Austrian German are based on High German<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>High German dialects spoken by the Ashkenazi Jews<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have some unique features and are considered an independent language, known as <\/span><b>Yiddish.<\/b><\/p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tatutrad.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/image-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4214\" style=\"width:675px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-caracteristicas-del-idioma-aleman\"> Features of German<\/h2>\n\n<p>As we have already covered the origin and history of German and its dialects; now we&#8217;re going to look at some of the features of the language:<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-fonologia-del-aleman\">German Phonology<\/h3>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The phonological system of German comprises <\/span><b>16 vowel phonemes and 21 consonant phonemes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Words that are spelled the same differentiate themselves by the length of the vowels (short or long. Furthermore, <\/span><b>German has three diphthongs:<\/b><\/p><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ai<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>oi<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>au<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><p><b>The accent usually falls on the first syllable of the root word<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although there are some exceptions, particularly in loanwords from other languages.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-nombres-adjetivos-articulos-y-pronombres\">Nouns, Adjetives, Articles and Pronouns<\/h3>\n\n<p><p><b>Nouns in German are declined according to the gender: masculine, feminine or neutral.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The gender of some nouns can be deciphered by looking at the ending.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">German has <\/span><b>two numbers (singular and plural), four cases (nominative, accusative, dative and genitive) and two articles (definite and indefinite).<\/b><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p>The articles and adjectives agree with the numbers in gender and singular case; in the plural case, there is no gender distinction.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-orden-de-las-palabras-en-aleman\">German Word Order<\/h3>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In main clauses, the verb appears in the first or second position. As for the subordinate clauses, <\/span><b>the verb usually appears at the end of the sentence. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The position of the rest of the elements within the phrase is relatively random.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-el-aleman-escrito\">Written German<\/h2>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to the 3rd and 4th centuries, all official documents were composed in Latin and writing in German was not common. However, <\/span><b>with the arrival of Johannes Gutenberg&#8217;s printing press and the translation of the Luther Bible, written German quickly spread throughout Germany.<\/b><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 1880, German orthography has undergone two important reforms (1091 and 1990) and <\/span><b>German is currently written using the Latin alphabet.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As a general rule, German words are pronounced how they are written.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-el-aleman-como-lengua-extranjera\">German as a Foreign Language<\/h2>\n\n<p>Thanks to its origins and the fact that it belongs to the Indo-European language family, German is considered an easy language to learn for many Europeans.<\/p>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, <\/span><b>German is currently the most studied language in Europe and Asia after English.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This popularity is due, in part, to the large number of German TV channels that can be watched in Europe.<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p>We\u2019ll save talking about the length of German words for another day, but did you know that the longest word in German is also the third longest word in the world?<\/p>\n\n<p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curious to find out what it is?
